Hotels Near Gare du Nord and Gare de l'Est: Where to Stay

The facade of the Gare du Nord in Paris

Staying right across from the train station is expensive and rarely pleasant. Here are our tips for choosing the right hotel near Gare du Nord and Gare de l'Est.

Arriving in Paris via Gare du Nord or Gare de l’Est means stepping right into the heart of the city—but not necessarily in the neighborhood where you want to stay. The hotels located right across from the train stations thrive on foot traffic and charge accordingly. A few metro stops away, you’ll find better options at lower prices, in streets where you’ll want to linger in the evening.

The right distance: ten minutes, not zero

The advice we give our clients is simple: look for a hotel in a neighborhood or within a fifteen-minute walk of your train station—not right outside it. That way, you’ll still have the convenience of arriving with your luggage, and you’ll be trading a transit neighborhood for a neighborhood where people actually live.

The immediate vicinity of the Gare du Nord is particularly affected: it’s very well connected, but noisy and not very pleasant once night falls.

Our nearest location: the 10th arrondissement, on the République side

Our hotel near the Canal Saint-Martin, on Boulevard de Magenta, is the best base for both train stations. Line 5 runs directly from République to Gare de l'Est and then to Gare du Nord without any transfers; the trip takes just a few minutes. On foot, Gare de l'Est is about a 15-minute walk up the boulevard.

The best thing about the neighborhood: you’re just a stone’s throw from the Canal Saint-Martin and Place de la République, so you’re surrounded by restaurants and bars that stay open late, in an area that’s much livelier than the areas around train stations. With 28 rooms and 24-hour reception, it’s also a great base for late arrivals on the Eurostar.

For an early-morning train: stay on the line

If you're leaving early in the morning, what matters isn't the distance as the crow flies, but the number of transfers. Both Gare du Nord and Gare de l'Est are served by lines 4 and 5, and Gare de l'Est is also served by line 7.

That’s what makesthe Hôtel Léman Opéra on Rue de Trévise a great choice if you’re departing from Gare de l’Est: the Cadet station on Line 7 is just a few minutes’ walk from the hotel. You’ll be staying in the heart of the 9th arrondissement, between the Grands Boulevards and the Opéra Garnier, and you can reach the train station without having to transfer.

If you're coming from north of Paris

Many travelers arriving at Gare du Nord actually spend their stay in Montmartre. In that case, you might as well stay right there: our hotel near the Sacré-Cœur, on Rue Aristide Bruant, puts you at the foot of the hill, just two blocks from Abbesses. Gare du Nord is easily accessible, and you’ll be staying in a village-like neighborhood rather than a train station area.

When to Book

Hotel demand around Paris’s northern train stations peaks three times a year: at the start and end of school breaks, during major city events, and during trade show periods. Outside of these times, booking one to two weeks in advance is usually sufficient. For a stay during a trade show or a long weekend, plan to book two to three months in advance.

In any case, booking directly on our website is still up to 15% cheaper than booking through third-party platforms—a difference that quickly adds up over several nights.

Are you traveling with a group?

For groups and teams, booking room by room quickly becomes unmanageable. For three or more rooms, our dedicated service takes over and creates a customized proposal, which may be spread across several of our nearby hotels: visit our group reservations page.
