Hotels near Gare du Nord and Gare de l'Est: Where to Leave Your Luggage

Staying right across from the station is expensive and rarely pleasant. Here are our tips for choosing the right hotel near Gare du Nord and Gare de l'Est.
Arriving in Paris via the Gare du Nord or the Gare de l'Est means stepping right into the heart of the city, but not necessarily into the neighborhood where you’d like to stay. The hotels located directly across from the stations thrive on the constant flow of travelers—and they charge accordingly. Just a few metro stops away, you’ll find better, cheaper options on streets where you’ll actually want to spend the night.
The right distance: ten minutes, not zero
The advice we give our customers is simple: look for a hotel that’s one stop away or a 15-minute walk from your train station—not right outside the station. This way, you’ll still have the convenience of arriving with your luggage, but you’ll swap a transit area for a lively neighborhood.
This is especially true of the immediate vicinity of the Gare du Nord: it’s very well connected, but noisy and not very pleasant after dark.
Our nearest location: the 10th arrondissement, next to République
Our hotel near the Canal Saint-Martin, on Boulevard de Magenta, is the best starting point for both stations. Line 5 connects République directly to Gare de l'Est and then to Gare du Nord, with no transfers; the trip takes just a few minutes. On foot, Gare de l'Est is about a fifteen-minute walk up the boulevard.
The neighborhood’s advantage: it’s just a stone’s throw from the Canal Saint-Martin and Place de la République, surrounded by restaurants and bars that stay open late, in an area that’s much livelier than the areas around the train stations. Its 28 rooms and 24-hour front desk also make it a great base for late arrivals on the Eurostar.
For an early morning train: stay on the line
So early in the morning, what matters isn't the distance as the crow flies, but the number of transfers. The Gare du Nord and the Gare de l'Est are served by lines 4 and 5, and the Gare de l'Est is also served by line 7.
That's why the Hôtel Léman Opéra, on Rue de Trévise, is a great choice if you're traveling from Gare de l'Est: Cadet Station, on Line 7, is just a few minutes' walk from the hotel. You'll be staying right in the heart of the 9th arrondissement, between the Grands Boulevards and the Opéra Garnier, and you'll reach the station without having to transfer.
If you're coming from the north of Paris
Many travelers arriving at Gare du Nord actually spend their time in Montmartre. In that case, it’s best to stay there: our hotel near the Sacré-Cœur, on Rue Aristide Bruant, is located at the foot of the Butte, two blocks from Abbesses. Gare du Nord is easily accessible, and you’ll be staying in a neighborhood with a small-town feel rather than in a station area.
When to Book
Hotel demand around the train stations in northern Paris follows three peaks: the start and end of school breaks, major city events, and trade show periods. Outside of these dates, booking one or two weeks in advance is usually sufficient. For a stay during a trade show or a long weekend, plan to book two or three months in advance.
In any case, booking directly on our website is up to 15% cheaper than on third-party platforms—a difference that quickly adds up over several nights.
Are you traveling in a group?
For groups and teams, booking room by room quickly becomes unmanageable. For three or more rooms, our dedicated service takes over and creates a customized package that can be spread across several of our nearby hotels: visit our group reservations page.
